Description

The original Duchesse d’Angouleme pear tree was a chance seedling grown in a garden near Angers, France.  Around 1808, M. Audusson, a nurseryman at Angers, discovered the pear and started propagating it as “Poire des Eparonnais”.  In 1820, Audusson presented the pear to the Duchesse d’Angouleme asking permission give the pear her name. DNA testing has reviled White Doyenne to be a parent of Duchesse d’Angouleme. It’s a reliable and heavy producer of very large Juicy pears sometimes weighing over 1.5 lbs.
