Description
The ‘Honey Jar’ Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba ‘Honey Jar’) is the undisputed “candy” of the jujube world. If ‘Li’ is the dependable classic and ‘Contorted’ is the artist, ‘Honey Jar’ is the gourmet obsession. It is widely considered the sweetest and juiciest variety available, often winning blind taste tests by a landslide.
Aesthetic & Growth: Compact and Precocious
While many jujube trees can eventually reach 20–30 feet if left to their own devices, ‘Honey Jar’ is known for its more compact and manageable size.
-
Appearance: It has an elegant, somewhat weeping growth habit with glossy, emerald-green leaves. In the late spring, it is covered in tiny, fragrant yellow flowers.
-
Early Fruiting: It is exceptionally “precocious,” meaning it often begins to produce fruit within the first year or two of planting, even when the tree is still quite small.
-
Structure: It has a more refined, delicate appearance than the larger ‘Li’ or ‘Lang’ varieties, making it an excellent choice for smaller suburban yards or even large containers.
The Fruit: The “Gold Standard” of Flavor
What ‘Honey Jar’ lacks in fruit size, it more than makes up for in quality.
-
Texture: It is significantly juicier and crunchier than other varieties. While some jujubes can be slightly airy or mealy, ‘Honey Jar’ has a dense, crisp “snap” similar to a fresh Gala apple.
-
Sweetness: It has the highest sugar content of the major cultivars. The flavor is a concentrated, honey-like sweetness with a thin, non-astringent skin.
-
Size: The fruits are smaller than ‘Li’—roughly the size of a large cherry or a small plum—and are typically round to slightly elongated.
